Russian Fireplaces and Kacheloffen

Kacheloffen"Russian fireplaces" and Kacheloffen are some of the other wood (and coal) burning options. The photos on this page are two wonderful examples of kacheloffen in the home and office of my Viennese cousins. These are great works of art but they are hardly ever used.

Such enclosed combustion units do have several advantages:

  • The fuel is inserted from another room - usually a utility area where the service staff can feed and maintain the fire without disturbing. Or if you don't have such a staff, to keep the living area cleaner.
  • The masonry and tile holds and radiates the heat.
  • They allow for good control over the speed and intensity of the fire.
  • They collect dust.
