Sewer Gases Topic:
PlumbingQuestion:
I have been occasionally noticing the smell of sewer gas in my house. I thought, maybe there's a blockage in the vent and would call a plumber -- but, I am noticing it seems to happen most often when the central air comes on. Is it possible there is something that smells that bad in my air ducts or the air system,or it is just a coincidence?
I'd rather not have to call both a plumber and an air-condition man, if I could narrow it down to one or the other. Is the drainage vent somehow tied into the air system? I have no sluggish drains and I ran water in all the tubs and sinks to be sure the traps are not dry (one of the bathrooms is rarely used, so it is possible the traps could've gone dry,but there has never been any odor in that bathroom, and I have since run water in there regularly) This is a municipal system (not a septic system).

Answer:
If the smell in the house is that of sewer gases, then I would start with a plumber. The theory being that when the central air comes on, you are changing the air pressure in the house and drawing the sewer gases from their source. The plumber should check all of the vents and drains, don't forget: the laundry, floor drains, and even the possibility of a combined storm water and sanitary sewer system. George
