Basements and Crawl SpacesQuestion:
I have been in this 40 y.o.. home for 1.5 years. Only in last few weeks has sump pump started running - more and more frequently. runs all time now, pumping groundwater from under slab out and away from house. gutters & down spouts are clear, positive drainage away from house - not the usual suspects. the water's coming from under the slab - a spring I think. what do you do about an underground spring? water keeps pumping out even though hasn't rained in many days. what to do?
Answer:
I hear about these "springs" all the time, but I usually find the issue to be related to other causes. In this case I would start be making sure that your water supply line has not sprung a leak.
First make sure that no one is using water in the house. Next open the cover of the water meter an look if the dial is turning. If it is a large leak, you may even hear the water running through the pipe, with a smaller leak it might take a while to show that water is flowing through the meter.
